The Challenge for Multi-Market Shopify Stores
Many Shopify merchants use Shopify Markets to sell in multiple regions (for example, U.S., EU, Canada) — but because Shopify aggregates orders, fees, and payouts in one place, accounting by region often becomes a mess. Without segmentation:
- All sales roll into the same summary entry
- Payouts and adjustments are mixed across markets
- Regional tax, COGS, and deposits can't be easily separated
That means your books can’t reflect true performance at the market level.
Bookkeep’s Solution: Country Segmentation for Shopify Markets
With our Country Segmentation feature, Bookkeep automatically sorts your Shopify data by market (country) using Shopify’s own delivery method metadata. Once segmented, each portion of your sales, tax, and payout data flows into a dedicated Bookkeep account, mapped to a chart of accounts that’s specific to that market.
That means:
- Sales by market are recognized separately.
- COGS, revenue, and tax lines are posted according to the correct regional mapping.
- Payout reconciliation is clean — you can match each market’s deposits independently.
How It Works (Behind the Scenes)
- Bookkeep uses Shopify order data (like shipping address, pickup location, or billing country) to assign each order to the correct country segment.
- Once Bookkeep classifies orders by country, it sends them into separate Bookkeep entities (or accounts), each with its own chart of accounts mapping.
- Daily journal entries (Ecommerce, Payments/Deposit, COGS) are posted in each market-level account, so your accounting platform reflects regional financials accurately.
This aligns with how we already post journal entries for Shopify — such as your daily sales summary, payouts, and COGS — only now they’re split by market.
If your store uses Shopify Markets Pro (via Global-e), Bookkeep still handles the special payout schedule and remits, mapping those through appropriately.
Key Benefits
- Regional P&L Clarity: Easily see top-line, cost, and margin per country.
- Accurate Tax Tracking: Separate clearing or withholding for market-liable tax.
- Better Reconciliation: Deposit journal entries reflect net payouts by market, broken out by sales day, making reconciliation more straightforward.
- Scalable Global Growth: Expand into new markets while keeping your books clean and auditable.
Getting Started
- In Bookkeep, connect or open your Shopify integration.
- Navigate to the segmentation settings — enable Country Segmentation (this is optional but gives enhanced reporting).
- Configure chart of accounts mapping for each market-level Bookkeep entity you create.
- Once turned on, Bookkeep will start sending market-segmented journal entries daily.
